Brazos Valley BioBlitz What is BioBlitz? BioBlitz is traditionally a 24 hour survey of organisms in an urban park. Scientists and volunteers survey and report on the number and diversity of organisms found within the park. BioBlitz events usually involve science, education, and celebration to highlight the importance of urban green spaces to biodiversity. When is the Brazos Valley BioBlitz? The 11th Annual Brazos Valley BioBlitz will be April 04 & 05, 2008 at Lick Creek Park, College Station, TX. It is organized by the Texas A&M University Chapter of the Society for Conservation Biology in cooperation with the Texas Cooperative Wildlife Collections and the City of College Station Parks & Recreation Department. Lick Creek Park is a large (512 acre) city park that has been left mostly undisturbed and is on the edge of the city limits. The park is bordered on one side by residential housing and a golf course. Development is predicted to surround the park in the near future. The Brazos Valley BioBlitz has been held at Lick Creek Park since 2001. What events are held at the Brazos Valley BioBlitz? Events are available for all ages. The organism surveys begin at 4pm on Friday and continue until 4pm on Saturday. Friday evening events include black-lighting for insects, listening for frogs and owl calls, and night walks. Saturday events include morning bird walks, exhibits/displays, and guided nature walks. An event schedule will be posted when details are finalized. Is there a fee? The Brazos Valley BioBlitz is FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. |
